The Athens-Clarke County police department is currently investigating its fifth fatal traffic incident of the year.
On Friday night at around 8:32 p.m., law enforcement responded to a serious single-vehicle accident that involved two pedestrians near the intersection of Gaines School Road and Lexington Road.
Tragically, one pedestrian, identified as Amy Morgan, 58, from Athens, succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash.
The second pedestrian, Anthony Braxton, 31, also from Athens, was transported to a nearby hospital but later passed away due to his injuries.
The driver involved, Lois Dua, 54, hailing from Bogart, Georgia, did not sustain any injuries in the incident.
Following the crash, police charged Dua with second-degree vehicular homicide, along with two counts of failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
This incident raises ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety and the responsibilities of drivers in crosswalks, highlighting the critical need for increased awareness and enforcement of traffic laws.
