Duolingo’s Next Adventure: Introducing Chess Lessons

Duolingo, renowned as the leading language-learning platform globally, is set to expand its educational offerings by introducing a new subject: Chess.

Currently in the testing phase, this Chess course represents the first addition to Duolingo’s curriculum since the rollout of Music and Math in 2023, merging one of the most traditional games into the realm of modern, gamified education.

Duolingo, which has previously engaged users with concepts of language, music, and mathematics, now embraces the strategic world of chess, which includes pawns, puzzles, and competitive gameplay.

The Chess course allows individuals to begin their chess journey from the basics, learning how each piece moves, recognizing tactical patterns, and developing strategies for victory. Most lessons emphasize solving brief puzzles designed to enhance critical thinking. Additionally, participants can test their newfound skills in quick “mini-matches” or full games against the in-app chess coach, Oscar, who is a popular character among Duolingo users.

As Duolingo’s inaugural game addition since last year, the Chess course aims to familiarize individuals with the game in a non-intimidating way. The company stated that while numerous chess platforms target experienced players, their course is designed for anyone intrigued by chess, regardless of prior knowledge or skill level. By simplifying access, the intention is to introduce chess to millions of potential players worldwide, mirroring its success in teaching languages, math, and music.

“Chess aligns perfectly with Duolingo’s mission,” remarked Luis von Ahn, CEO of the company. “It stimulates cognitive functions, is rich in strategy, and similar to language acquisition, skill levels improve with consistent practice.”

The course is currently being piloted with a select group of learners, and Duolingo plans to launch the Chess program for iOS users in English shortly. There are also plans underway to support other operating systems and language options in the future.
