Having collaborated with Perry on the long-running series *Sistas*, Obsidian was the first choice for the role of Lena Derriecott King, inspired by the actual experiences of a young woman who journeyed from a small-town girl to a soldier. When Perry shared the script with her, she was initially astonished by its epic nature, questioning if it was fiction before learning it was based on historical fact.

“Tyler said, ‘This is history. This is a real story,'” she recalled. The more she learned, the more she was honored by the offer to portray Lena, reflecting on how her character’s journey symbolized growth and possibility. “She’s a lesson to us all, that we can become exactly what we never think we can.”
