NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The sports community is grieving the loss of Ed Daniels, the long-serving sports director of WGNO, who passed away on Friday, August 16. His death followed a heart attack he suffered while in California, where he was covering the New Orleans Saints’ training camp.
Ed’s wife, Robin, accompanied him on the trip, which was partly for work and partly for leisure. Tragically, shortly after midnight on July 26, Ed experienced a severe heart attack that led to his hospitalization. He was later transferred back to New Orleans, receiving care at the Ochsner main campus on Jefferson Highway. In a heartfelt letter to the Clarion Herald, Robin expressed her appreciation to Saints owner Gayle Benson for facilitating his return flight to Louisiana.
Ed’s career at WGNO began in 1992, where he quickly established himself as a key figure in the newsroom. He pioneered the popular Friday Night Football program, which later inspired the Friday Night Fastball, designed to showcase the talents of young local athletes. His influence in local sports broadcasting was profound, earning him various accolades including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Orleans Press Club and recognition as Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association on two occasions.
Louisiana was always Ed’s home; he graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School in 1975 and earned his degree from Loyola University in 1979. His dedication to covering Louisiana sports made him a beloved figure throughout the state.
The WGNO newsroom feels the weight of Ed’s absence deeply. His contributions were invaluable, and his impact on the organization and community is immeasurable. The team is committed to maintaining the high professional standards that Ed exemplified throughout his distinguished career.
In this time of sorrow, the thoughts and prayers of the WGNO staff go out to Ed’s family, friends, and loyal viewers. The station will continue to share stories highlighting Ed’s legacy in the coming days.
