Wrexham’s Match Against Shrewsbury Under Investigation Following Crowd Issues
The English Football League (EFL) is scrutinizing crowd behavior during Wrexham’s League One match against Shrewsbury Town, which took place on Thursday evening.
During the second half of the game at The Croud Meadow, tensions escalated when Wrexham’s James McClean prepared to take a throw-in near the section occupied by Shrewsbury supporters. Stewards intervened, forming a line to manage the situation as play was temporarily stopped.
Video evidence captured the moment when items were hurled from the stands towards McClean, who had recently criticized Shrewsbury in a now-deleted Instagram post following Wrexham’s 2-1 loss. The provocative nature of his comments may have contributed to the hostility displayed by some fans.
In a statement to Sky Sports regarding the incident, Wrexham’s manager Phil Parkinson defended McClean, stating, “He’s fine. James is used to it wherever he goes.” He acknowledged the challenges McClean faces, both at home and away, but emphasized that the player is accustomed to such situations.
At this point, it is uncertain if the scrutiny from the EFL will extend to McClean’s earlier social media remarks. However, Wrexham has confirmed that the governing body is focused on the crowd disturbances that occurred during this intense cross-border derby.
