El Paso County Responds to Red Flour Beetle Infestation in Socorro
EL PASO, Texas — A significant effort is underway to address a major red flour beetle infestation in Socorro as El Paso County has stepped in to assist local residents. This comes as part of ongoing efforts to manage the unexpected surge in beetle populations.
On Monday, October 21, the El Paso County Commissioners Court unanimously voted to allocate $25,000 in funding specifically to help combat the invasive beetle population affecting Socorro and its nearby areas.
County officials indicated that these funds will be utilized for purchasing pesticides, which will then be made available to the community. “Beetles are a natural part of the ecosystem here and are generally found in this area. However, this year has seen an unusual and substantial increase in their numbers. It is essential for us all to collaborate effectively to eradicate them promptly,” stated County Commissioner Iliana Holguin.
While a date for pesticide distribution has not yet been established, Holguin noted that each resident will receive one unit of pesticide. “We will announce more detailed information regarding the distribution process very soon,” she confirmed.
Officials emphasized that the pesticides are safe for home use, ensuring that all necessary precautions will be taken to protect residents’ health while addressing the infestation.
The beetle issue, which initially emerged in August, still persists as residents face challenges from these pests well into October. In response, the City of Socorro is collaborating with experts from Texas A&M University, the Texas Department of Agriculture, and other relevant organizations to develop an effective response strategy.
Previous reports have indicated that pecan shells are likely contributing to the spread of the infestation, compounding the problem for local communities.
