Insights from the Cast of “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Its Final Season and Future Projects

Elisabeth Moss recently spoke with “Extra” regarding the highly anticipated sixth and final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” As the series approaches its conclusion, she expressed her pride in the finale, stating, “It’s going to be beautiful — I’m not gonna lie. We’re so proud of the finale.”

Moss elaborated on the significance of the closing episodes, highlighting their personal impact: “They’re meaningful to me and they’re meaningful to all of us, and I’m really, really proud of them, genuinely, sincerely, so I hope everybody feels the same way.” She acknowledged the patience required from viewers throughout the series, adding, “We understand it has been a tough watch, and we wanted to reward our audience for that and their loyalty while fulfilling some of their expectations over the past five seasons.”

In discussing her character, June, and Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena, Moss hinted at their final arc. She suggested that their ending feels appropriate: “I think that where they end up is very right, let me say that. I think it’s very… exactly how it should be.” She noted June’s perspective on Serena as being particularly insightful, indicating that June recognizes both the strengths and flaws in Serena. Moss stated, “I think she sees Serena for exactly who she is… So, Serena feels like if I can get her approval, her forgiveness, that will actually mean something.”

She added, “June has no delusions about Serena. She knows who she is and she’s not going to forgive her, but she’s also not going to throw her away. I think she sees the good qualities… but I don’t think she’s about to be fooled by Serena again.”

On a lighter note, Moss revealed some of the items she took from the set, humorously mentioning, “I got a Scrabble board. I fought people for things. I called dibs. I took a lot of costumes… I took the music box, too.” Addressing rumors about someone wanting June’s underwear, she clarified, “They didn’t specifically ask for my underwear, so that was good news… But they still didn’t get the underwear. I’m taking it.”

Moss also shared details about the upcoming sequel series, “The Testaments.” She provided insight into how this new narrative will diverge from the original book, saying, “It’s gonna pick up where our show leaves off, pretty much. So we have sort of divorced ourselves from the book in that sense.” While keeping specifics under wraps, she mentioned, “The show is gonna focus on Hannah, and of course Lydia is in it as well.”

Turning to Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Serena, she reflected on the complexities of portraying a character with whom she’s often at odds. Strahovski noted, “It’s probably the only character I’ve ever disagreed with to this extent, and that’s been really interesting to navigate.”

She acknowledged the challenge of portraying Serena’s duality, saying, “It’s easy to judge her. It’s easy to hate her, but you have to put that aside when you’re trying to get into her humanity… there’s so much to her that I’ve gotten to play.” Strahovski described Serena as not just a villain, but as “soft… broken and vulnerable… and everything in between.”

Though she could not disclose the fate of Serena, she was enthusiastic about the series finale, describing it as “very moving, heartbreaking, shocking, and meaningful.”

When asked about her keepsakes from the set, Strahovski humorously mentioned, “I took my finger — the leather, teal finger… which I haven’t used since the last day of set.”

As “The Handmaid’s Tale” continues to stream on Hulu, the anticipation surrounding its conclusion and future adaptations remains high among fans and critics alike.
