Ellen Pompeo Discusses New Series “Good American Family” Inspired by Natalia Grace’s Story

Ellen Pompeo recently engaged in a conversation with “Extra’s” Melvin Robert regarding her upcoming drama series, “Good American Family,” which is based on the widely publicized case of Natalia Grace.

While Pompeo acknowledged her awareness of Natalia’s story, she admitted to not having watched any documentary series that chronicles the details of her life.

In “Good American Family,” Pompeo portrays Kristine Barnett, a mother who, along with her husband Michael Barnett (played by Mark Duplass), adopts a girl they believe to be eight years old and suffering from a rare form of dwarfism. However, as the narrative unfolds, they begin to question the girl’s true identity.

The actress emphasized that the show’s aim is to provide varied “perspectives” on the situation, clarifying that the intention is not to present specific opinions.

Initially uncertain about her participation in the project, Ellen recalled her agent encouraging her to embrace the role. “You can disappear into this character and… leave Meredith Grey [from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’] behind for these eight episodes, and I think it’s a chance you should take,” her agent expressed, which ultimately swayed her decision.

Reflecting on the experience, Pompeo shared, “It was an opportunity to step into something completely different. I worked with the hair and makeup team and the brilliant costumer. We had such a great time. The talented craftspeople in Hollywood are remarkable at what they do, and collaborating with them made the process enjoyable. The creativity in such partnerships often leads to magical results.”

As a mother herself, Ellen mentioned how she was able to channel her personal experiences into her character. “All mothers possess that deep intensity and passion for their children, along with a drive to be the best parent possible. Each individual defines what that means, contributing their unique truth to the experience,” she explained.

She further elaborated, “I think it’s about tapping into that emotional intensity — those moments when I feel immense pride in my children or, conversely, when they are simply refusing to cooperate, like not wanting to take a bath when time is of the essence. Drawing from those feelings helps in portraying the character authentically.”

The premiere of “Good American Family” is set for March 19 on Hulu.
