Ellen Pompeo Got Emotional During the Meredith and George Intimate Scene

While Grey’s Anatomy has delivered numerous memorable romances, one particular storyline that often fails to resonate with audiences is the brief relationship between Meredith and George in Season 2. Ellen Pompeo, who portrays Meredith Grey, recently shared her own distaste for this plotline during an appearance on Call Her Daddy.

To provide context, in Season 2’s episode titled “Yesterday,” Meredith had just confronted her father and was dealing with the emotional fallout from her breakup with Derek when George confessed his feelings for her. His heartfelt declaration included lines like, “I know I’m not a world-renowned surgeon… But I would never leave you. I would never hurt you. And I will never stop loving you.” Following this pivotal moment, the two characters ended up sleeping together; however, the repercussions of this encounter were not as idyllic as the scenario may suggest.

Reflecting on that moment, Pompeo conveyed her discomfort about filming the intimate scene along with her co-star T.R. Knight, who played George. She mentioned during the podcast that both she and Knight had reservations about the scene, stating, “We cried. And the scene was so uncomfortable and awkward… When we filmed it, it was so bad. And then the network said there was too much thrusting.” The experience of having to reshoot the scene further added to their collective discomfort.

Reflecting on the Past

To this day, Pompeo has chosen not to watch the scene between Meredith and George, stating that she was genuinely in tears during many parts of it, partly because of how she felt about the material rather than the narrative itself. She has spoken before about how her authentic emotions often translate into her performances. In a previous discussion on her own podcast, she revealed her disdain for the famous “Pick me. Choose me. Love me” scene. Her visceral emotional response, which she admitted was out of frustration rather than the script, made its way into the final cut of the scene.

“I’m bawling my eyes out, but not for the reasons in the scene,” Pompeo explained. “I’m bawling because I was like, I can’t believe that I’m on TV begging a man to love me.” Despite her reservations about these moments, Pompeo has acknowledged the cultural impact they have had, particularly with audiences who still resonate with the intensity of these dramatic encounters. She credited Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, for her foresight, stating, “To [Shonda Rhimes’] credit, she knew that was going to pop.” Reflecting on her initial doubts, she remarked on how the scene became one of the most iconic moments in the series’ history, even if it wasn’t one she embraced at the time.
