Elon Musk Launches New Preschool in Texas: Ad Astra
Elon Musk is set to establish a preschool in Texas named Ad Astra, a phrase that translates from Latin to “to the stars.” This innovative educational institution is situated near Bastrop, approximately 30 miles from Austin.
As detailed on the school’s website, Ad Astra adopts a Montessori methodology emphasizing hands-on, project-based learning. The curriculum integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), aligning with Musk’s known interest in these fields.
Recent filings with Texas state authorities, reported by Bloomberg, reveal that Ad Astra was granted an initial permit last month, allowing it to enroll up to 21 students.
The school is established on a sprawling 40-acre property and operates out of a renovated 4,000-square-foot residence. A visit to the site on a weekday morning indicated that the school was not yet in session, as only one vehicle was noted in the parking area without any visible children present on the grounds.
According to the school’s website, Ad Astra is expected to open in the upcoming fall semester, with applications now being accepted for the 2024-25 academic year. The preschool caters to children between the ages of three and nine.
Ad Astra represents a segment of Musk’s broader educational initiatives. In the previous year, he made headlines by donating $100 million to initiate a new university in Austin. Additionally, he contributed $137 million this year towards the establishment of both primary and secondary schools with a clear focus on STEM education.
Reports suggest that Ad Astra has been partially designed for the benefit of Musk’s children and those of his employees, given its proximity—just a five-minute drive—from a SpaceX facility. Musk is known to have at least 12 children, including six born in the last five years.
Currently, Ad Astra seeks to fill two positions: a primary assistant teacher for children aged three to six, and a STEM assistant teacher for those aged six to nine, as indicated on their careers page.
