Elton John’s Role in the Reunion of John Lennon and Yoko Ono Explored in New Documentary

John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s enduring love story has captivated audiences for decades, not only because of their influential music but also due to the profound bond they shared. However, their relationship was not without difficulties; the couple famously experienced a significant separation in the 1970s that raised questions about their future together. Recently, Elton John discussed his involvement in their remarkable reunion during a promotional event for his new documentary.

In the documentary titled Elton John: Never Too Late, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, Elton reflects on personal anecdotes from his illustrious career, including his friendships with impactful figures like Lennon and Ono. One of the most touching stories reveals how Elton contributed to rekindling their romance after a prolonged split.

Elton reminisced about a pivotal concert that took place in 1974, which he believes served as a catalyst for Lennon and Ono’s reconciliation. This significant event was Elton’s Thanksgiving Day concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City, during which Lennon and Ono had already been apart for about 18 months.

“I was probably the catalyst of John and Yoko getting back together,” Elton stated, shedding light on the concert’s unexpected influence on their relationship. He recounted how he invited Lennon to join him on stage, unaware that this would lead to a reunion with Ono.

According to reports from InsideHook, Elton’s guitarist noted that Lennon was unaware of Ono’s attendance at the concert – a surprise that fate orchestrated. This unexpected encounter marked the beginning of their reunion journey after more than a year of separation.

Elton expressed his happiness at witnessing the couple’s love story come full circle. He mentioned, “Of course, they did get back together, and they had Sean.” Seeing his friends reunite and later have a son was a moment he described as magical.

The documentary also touches on the transformative effect of their reconciliation on Lennon’s life. Elton observed that after reuniting with Ono, Lennon seemed to mellow, moving away from some of the wild behavior associated with his earlier years. He noted that Lennon ceased using drugs and adopted a more settled lifestyle, although he humorously admitted that he had not quite followed suit at that time.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono first met in London in 1966 and quickly became inseparable. They married in 1969 in Gibraltar, but by 1973, they faced significant challenges in their relationship and separated to pursue their individual careers. Their paths crossed again in 1974 at Elton’s concert, ultimately leading to a full reconciliation. By 1975, the couple had both reconciled and welcomed their son, Sean, in October.

Fans can look forward to the full release of Elton John: Never Too Late, which is set to debut on Disney+ on December 13.
