Elton John’s Health Challenges: A Candid Look at Vision Loss
Renowned musician Elton John has opened up about the profound impact of his vision loss, sharing a distressing update that has resonated with fans and the public alike.
During an appearance on Good Morning America late last year, the 78-year-old icon disclosed that he had lost sight in his right eye due to an eye infection contracted the previous summer while vacationing in the South of France. This incident has drastically altered his daily life and routines.
In a more recent interview with The Times of London, which was published on April 4, Sir Elton expressed his frustration and sadness over his current condition. “I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read,” he explained, noting the emotional toll it takes on him, especially when it comes to watching his sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, play sports. “It has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up,” he added.
The legendary artist acknowledged the distress that comes with such challenges but also embraced a sense of gratitude. “You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have,” John reflected, emphasizing the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. “I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of my left eye. So you say to yourself, ‘Just get on with it.’”
Elton’s health concerns are not only affecting his day-to-day life but also his career. He shared that his ability to create new music may be hindered due to his vision issues, stating, “I can’t see a lyric, for start. We’re taking an initiative to try and get it better, but at the moment, that’s really what we’re concentrating on.” He added, “It kinda floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
Addressing his eyesight during the stage debut of The Devil Wears Prada in London, John remarked, “As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it,” illustrating his passion for music despite his limitations.
In a light-hearted moment at the 2025 Golden Globes, John jokingly reassured the audience about his condition, saying, “I just want to reassure everybody — it’s not as bad as it seems. I’m so pleased to be here with my co-host, Rihanna,” humorously poking fun at the situation alongside fellow Grammy winner Brandi Carlile.
Despite battling his eyesight challenges, John continues to pursue his musical artistry and has collaborated with Carlile on a new album titled Who Believes in Angels?, which was released on April 5. The duo is scheduled to perform on Saturday Night Live as musical guests, followed by a concert special the next day to celebrate their latest project.
