The 75th ACE Eddie Awards celebrated the best in film and television editing on Friday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall, marking the event’s rescheduling from its original January date due to wildfires affecting the Los Angeles area. This year’s winners included standout films such as “Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked,” and “The Wild Robot,” showcasing the dynamic talent within the industry.
Notably, Juliette Welfling took home the award for Best Edited Feature Film in a Drama for “Emilia Pérez,” while Myron Kerstein received the honor for Best Edited Feature Film in a Comedy for “Wicked.” These victories contrast with the 97th Academy Awards, where Sean Baker secured the Oscar for Best Film Editing for “Anora” earlier this month. Historically, the ACE Eddie Awards have often predicted Oscar winners, particularly in the editing categories, with around two-thirds of ACE feature film winners eventually receiving an Oscar in this category. Since the ACE divided its main film awards into drama and comedy/musical categories 25 years ago, the drama award has emerged victorious at the Oscars 14 times, while the comedy/musical category has seen two wins.
The animated feature award was presented to Mary Blee for “The Wild Robot,” while Michelle McMillan was recognized as a top editor for a television series with her work on “X-Men ’97.” In the realm of nonfiction, Monique Zavistovski was awarded for her editing in the documentary “Will & Harper,” while the team comprising Evan Wise, Charles Divak, Adrienne Gits, and Doug Abel won for “Chimp Crazy” in the documentary series category.
Other notable television winners included the editing team of Maria Gonzales and Aika Miyake for “Shōgun,” Peter H. Oliver and Benjamin Gerstein for “Baby Reindeer,” Russell Griffin for “Frasier,” Liza Cardinale and Dane McMaster for “What We Do in the Shadows,” and Doc Crotzer for “Roadhouse” as well as the ensemble editing team for “Welcome to Wrexham.”
Special recognition was awarded to Jon M. Chu, director of “Wicked,” who received the Filmmaker of the Year award, alongside film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch, both honored for their career achievements.
