This year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations spotlight “Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez” as the frontrunners, showcasing a broad array of talent and productions, with an unprecedented absence of dominant favorites across key categories.
In addition to these leading films, titles such as “The Brutalist,” “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” and “A Complete Unknown” are also in the race. Among the 24 actors nominated, several—such as Demi Moore in “The Substance,” Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande for “Wicked,” and Selena Gomez in “Emilia Pérez”—are receiving their first BAFTA nominations, reflecting a mix of both seasoned and new talent.
Additionally, familiar names like Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”), Hugh Grant (“Heretic”), and Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Last Showgirl”) continue to show strong presence at the BAFTAs. Yet, notable is the absence of Denzel Washington, once again overlooked for his performance in “Gladiator 2,” marking a lingering gap in recognition for this acclaimed actor.
Notably, “Conclave,” directed by Edward Berger and centered around a Vatican mystery, has received a total of 12 nominations, which include categories for best film, director, and acting for Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini. Conversely, “Emilia Pérez,” directed by Jacques Audiard and featuring a storyline about a trans Mexican cartel leader, has garnered 11 nominations, including those for best film and lead performances.
Both films topped their respective longlists, although “Emilia Pérez” initially had a marginal edge with 15 longlist slots compared to “Conclave’s” 14.
Another significant contender, “The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet, has secured nine nominations. Close behind are “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Wicked,” each receiving seven nominations, while “A Complete Unknown” and the Irish-language comedic biopic “Kneecap”—despite its lower budget—managed six nominations, illustrating the strong competition this year.
Interestingly, despite receiving seven nominations, “Wicked” failed to secure a spot among the five films nominated for the best film category. Alongside “Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez,” competing titles include “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” and “A Complete Unknown.” This absence highlights potential discrepancies between BAFTA and Oscar nominations this year.
Alongside the notable omissions, such as Washington and Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl,” the recognition for Luca Guadagnino’s film “Challengers” also remains absent.
However, the nominations feature some surprises, including Jeremy Strong’s nod for his portrayal in “The Apprentice,” where he will compete against Kieran Culkin. Furthermore, Coralie Fargeat’s inclusion as the only female director nominated for her body-horror film “The Substance” has garnered attention, although many had anticipated more recognition for Payal Kapadia for “All We Imagine as Light.”
In a nod to the thriving Irish film scene, “Kneecap” continues to resonate within award circles with six nominations, a commendable achievement for an independent film, particularly for its recognition in screenplay, casting, and editing.
In light of California’s recent wildfires, industry focus has shifted significantly. BAFTA film chair Sara Putt expressed the Academy’s sympathies for those affected, acknowledging the difficult circumstances. While the final voting dates remain unchanged, voters unable to participate in the preliminary round will still have a chance to vote for the winners.
The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 16, 2024, at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with David Tennant returning as the event’s host.
