Emilio Estevez Develops Script for “The Mighty Ducks 4” Amid Disney+ Setbacks
Emilio Estevez, known for his iconic role in the “Mighty Ducks” film series, expressed his dissatisfaction with how the Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” unfolded. Following the first season, the actor decided to depart from the project, yet his connection to the franchise remained strong.
In a recent discussion on Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Estevez revealed that he took it upon himself to write a script for a potential sequel, titled “The Mighty Ducks 4.” His motivation behind this endeavor was to address what he deemed the missteps of the TV series. Unfortunately, Estevez faced obstacles when it came to bringing his vision to life.
“I also wrote ‘Mighty Ducks 4’ because I wanted to make up for all of the disasters that happened on the ‘Game Changers’ series,” Estevez shared. He elaborated on the plot, which reintroduces his character, Gordon Bombay. The storyline involved Bombay being drawn back into coaching by characters played by Joshua Jackson and Kenan Thompson, as they formed an expansion team for a professional women’s hockey league.
Estevez confirmed that his concept featured an all-girls team. His narrative intended to start with Bombay coaching a roller derby team before being persuaded to take those young athletes under his wing for the new hockey venture.
“And it was charming and contemporary and cool and again, organically of the moment where we’re at,” he mentioned, reflecting on the relevance of his story. However, he noted that Disney opted not to pursue his idea.
After Horowitz remarked that the concept seemed like a “no brainer,” Estevez humorously asked, “Can you look at the camera and say that?”
Estevez’s enthusiasm for reviving the franchise highlights the enduring appeal of “The Mighty Ducks” and the potential for stories that resonate with current themes and audiences. The rejection of his script from Disney raises questions about the direction of legacy franchises and the challenges faced by creators wanting to honor their origins while adapting to contemporary audiences.
