Emirates is on track to become the first airline globally to earn certification as an Autism Certified Airline. The Dubai-based airline plans to provide specialized training for its 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff. This initiative aims to enhance the flying experience for passengers with autism and those who have sensory sensitivities, offering personalized services that make air travel more accessible. This move follows JSX’s 2023 distinction as the first airline recognized as “Autism Aware” by Autism Double-Checked.

The official designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) is expected to be presented in the coming months. In addition to the certification, Emirates intends to introduce new standards and services aimed at improving both ground and in-flight travel experiences for customers on the autism spectrum, as well as their families, with more detailed announcements anticipated later this year.

Traveling by air can present unique challenges for individuals with autism, particularly concerning sensory stimuli encountered during flights. A survey conducted by AutismTravel.com indicates that 78% of families are reluctant to travel or explore new places. Moreover, 94% of respondents expressed a willingness to travel more frequently if they could access destinations where staff are trained and certified in autism awareness.

Understanding the Autism Certified Airline Designation (ACA)

In the development of this new autism certification, IBCCES conducted a comprehensive survey involving over 14,000 participants with diverse disabilities, including individuals with autism and their caregivers. Feedback was also gathered from a survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and insights from 1,200 industry professionals to establish standards that significantly benefit both passengers and airline staff in all environments, whether on the ground or during flights.

Key enhancements will include the rollout of digital sensory guides, which will inform travelers about the environments they will encounter in Dubai, focusing on elements such as ambient sound levels, lighting variations, and potential sights and smells. Additionally, in-flight offerings will incorporate neurodiverse sensory tools, such as fidget toys, which are intended to foster focus and alleviate anxiety.

As part of its commitment to accessibility, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is making strides to become the most inclusive airport worldwide. Recently, the airport unveiled its first dedicated Assisted Travel Lounge at Terminal 2. This lounge provides a “safe and comfortable” environment specifically designed for travelers with disabilities, including autism and other hidden conditions.

The lounge includes areas designed for wheelchair users, tactile surfaces to assist with navigation, specially arranged seating for individuals with hearing impairments to facilitate communication, a calming decompression zone for individuals on the autism spectrum, and a secure space for unaccompanied minors.

In 2022, the airport launched the Sunflower Lanyard Program to help staff quickly identify and assist travelers with hidden disabilities. The program includes specialized lanes for autism-friendly services at check-in, passport control, security checks, and boarding processes.

Moreover, all 33,000 staff members at the airport receive training focused on hidden disabilities, ensuring that they can cater effectively to the needs of all passengers. Additional services for disabled travelers include complimentary two-hour parking, accessible taxi services, and wheelchair assistance.
