November 11 marks Veterans Day, a significant occasion to honor those who have served in the military. Furthermore, the entire month of November is recognized as Military Family Appreciation Month. This period not only serves to acknowledge the sacrifices made by veterans and service members but also shines a light on the unique challenges faced by their families, who provide unwavering support to their loved ones in uniform.
Additionally, it is important to express gratitude to those in the nonprofit sector who are dedicated to assisting our veterans and their families. Their commitment plays a crucial role in bridging the gaps experienced by military families.
A fitting way to commemorate Veterans Day is by supporting organizations that cater to veterans and military-connected communities. In this spirit, HigherEdJobs, HigherEdMilitary, and my family will contribute to the following organizations, each providing insight into their mission:
Blue Star Families: “Our goal is to enhance the lives of military families through community connections that foster mutual support. We recognize that by supporting each other, we create stronger, more resilient communities. Our research aims to highlight the distinct challenges that military families encounter, and we strive to mitigate the feelings of isolation that can arise from frequent relocations and deployments.”
National Military Family Association: “We serve as the primary resource for policymakers who need insight into the challenges faced by military families. Our engagement with these communities allows us to advocate effectively on behalf of those who also serve alongside our service members, ensuring that their voices are heard across legislative and defense platforms.”
Pat Tillman Foundation: “Our mission is to bring together and empower extraordinary military service members, veterans, and their spouses, preparing them to emerge as influential leaders in both the public and private sectors, committed to serving others.”
Student Veterans of America: “SVA focuses on elevating the personal, academic, and professional paths of veterans in higher education through various programs and advocacy efforts. We aim to ensure that student veterans gain a meaningful educational experience that extends beyond traditional learning environments.”
Warrior Scholar Project: “Partnering with esteemed colleges and universities, the Warrior-Scholar Project provides intensive college-preparatory boot camps tailored for enlisted veterans and transitioning service members. These camps cover diverse disciplines such as Humanities, STEM, and Business & Entrepreneurship.”
Recognizing that charitable giving is a deeply personal decision, we respect the choice of individuals to support specific causes. There are numerous other organizations working for the betterment of veterans and the military community. We encourage you to explore their websites for further information and to assess their operations through platforms like GuideStar and Charity Navigator.
