The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has faced its share of challenges in recent years, but its interconnected storytelling continues to be a major strength, offering thrilling character returns that surprise fans. One notable return was that of Red Skull in Avengers: Endgame, a character who had mysteriously vanished from the franchise since Captain America: The First Avenger. Now, Ross Marquand, the actor who succeeded Hugo Weaving in the role, expresses a desire to reprise his character in an upcoming project.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Marquand shared that he has been advocating for a Disney+ limited series focused on Captain America, where he would once again assume the mantle of Red Skull. He passionately discussed the unfinished narrative surrounding his character and the Infinity Stones, indicating that there is still much to explore:

“You don’t have to twist my arm. I keep pushing for a Disney+ series for Captain America. I’ve been pitching a series for seven years. I envision it as a six or seven-part miniseries. The opening episode could feature Cap, Tony Stark, and Bruce discussing the potential threats and the return of the stones, along with addressing questions like, ‘How do we bring Natasha back?’ It’s a question that has lingered in my mind regarding the stones and their implications.”

A ‘Captain America’ Continuation Series Has Been Discussed Before

Marquand’s vision for the Captain America series is not entirely new. While a specific miniseries has yet to be confirmed, speculation regarding Chris Evans’ return to the MCU has been widespread. Various reports over the years, including those from outlets like Variety, have hinted at the actor potentially reprising his role. Although Evans made a funny cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine as the Human Torch, he has yet to don the Captain America suit again.

The MCU is building towards significant events with upcoming titles like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Recent announcements have unveiled a remarkable cast for Doomsday, incorporating both MCU veterans and actors from legacy franchises. Given the comic book storyline of Secret Wars, there is a strong chance that Evans could return for a brief but impactful appearance alongside Sam Wilson’s Captain America. The ongoing Multiverse Saga has established a precedent for variant roles, which could facilitate such a reunion.

The idea of Captain America embarking on a quest to return the Infinity Stones remains an intriguing narrative possibility. While the chances of this storyline materializing may diminish over time, the ever-expanding MCU keeps the door open for familiar faces to return, ensuring that Evans’ legacy as Captain America could very well continue.
