Impacts of Communication Network Testing on Electric Grid Operations
During the recent DTECH 2025 event, Jon Beckman, Director of Business Operations at VIAVI Solutions, engaged in an insightful discussion with Angela Godwin regarding the essential role of communication network testing and fiber optic sensing in enhancing the operational efficiency of electrical grids.
Modern grid operators rely on a diverse array of communication technologies to effectively manage and monitor the complex infrastructure of the electric grid. This includes various mediums such as fiber optic cables, microwave links, and advanced wireless technologies like 5G and LTE.
Beckman emphasized the significance of these communication networks, stating, “These networks are mission critical to the safe and reliable operation of the electric grid itself.” Consequently, he advocates for rigorous testing protocols to ensure their reliability and safety.
Utilities that neglect to regularly test their communication networks risk facing severe operational challenges. Beckman points out that untested systems can deteriorate without warning, potentially leading to a loss of visibility and control over crucial components of the grid.
“In the event of a communication system failure, it’s vital to quickly diagnose, locate, and address the issue,” Beckman explained. He illustrated this with an example of a transmission operator in Montana, who might face a grueling journey in adverse weather conditions—like snow—just to restore functionality at a remote substation. “Efficiency in diagnosis and repair is crucial; you need to tackle issues accurately on the first attempt,” he added.
Investing in comprehensive testing and maintenance of communication networks not only improves operational efficiency but also significantly enhances the safety and reliability of electric grid services.
