“My intention is to avoid overshadowing the joy, recognition, and celebration that this occasion represents. It is a moment dedicated to the players, coaches, fans, and everyone dedicated to advancing the women’s game.”
Wright has responded to Aluko’s comments on Instagram, a post that has gained over 137,000 likes, attracting attention from prominent figures in women’s football, including England stars Mary Earps, Alessia Russo, and Alex Greenwood.
The former professional player, now 61, reflected on his commitment to give back to football following a 15-year career that commenced at Crystal Palace in 1985.
“Due to a history where men’s participation effectively sidelined women’s football for half a century, the sport now faces significant systemic challenges. It requires a collective effort to address these issues,” Wright noted, recalling his collaboration with Aluko.
“As the birthplace of modern football, we hold the responsibility to lead the charge in women’s football,” he continued.
“Personally, I am dedicated to giving back to this sport, as it has provided me with so much throughout my life.”
