Eric Comrie has officially secured the position of backup goaltender for the Winnipeg Jets. This decision comes on the heels of the team’s first victory of the season, prompting the organization to address their ongoing three-goalie situation. Kaapo Kahkonen has been placed on waivers, a move that allows the Jets to solidify their goaltending lineup.
Comrie filled in as the backup during the Jets’ season opener against the Edmonton Oilers, as starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck had temporarily left the team for personal reasons earlier in the week. The Jets initially retained three goaltenders on their opening night roster to ensure adequate coverage during Hellebuyck’s absence.

Kahkonen, who entered the Jets’ umbrella as a free agent this summer, signed a one-year contract valued at one million dollars. Over his five seasons in the NHL, he has played for the Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, and New Jersey Devils, adding depth to his experience. Should he clear waivers on Friday, it’s anticipated he will be assigned to the Manitoba Moose. However, the Jets may still choose to maintain three goaltenders on their 23-man roster.
The Manitoba Moose currently feature two goalies on their opening night roster, Thomas Milic and Domenic DiVincentiis, indicating the team’s focus on developing their netminding prospects.
