Erika Henningsen, known for her previous Broadway roles, is currently starring alongside Jonathan Groff in the new show Just In Time. Their collaboration has spanned several weeks, and before their Zoom interview with Bustle, Henningsen was amused to learn about Groff’s reputation for an unusual stage occurrence: his tendency to spit while performing, referred to by fans as the “holy water” of a Tony winner.

Recalling a rehearsal moment, Henningsen laughed as Groff remarked on the surprising amount of saliva released during his performance. “I couldn’t believe it hadn’t happened yet,” she said, appreciating the comedic dynamics of their partnership.

Set to open on April 23, Just In Time tells the story of Bobby Darin, portrayed by Groff. The musical not only explores Darin’s rise to fame but also emphasizes the significant role of women in his life, including his mother, grandmother, first love Connie Francis, and notably, Sandra Dee, played by Henningsen. Dee, a prominent figure of the ’60s, was a child star who seamlessly transitioned into a successful acting career.

In preparation for her role as Dee, Henningsen immersed herself in various interviews featuring Dee and contemporary child stars to understand the pressures they face in the spotlight. She noted the contrast between their public personas and personal experiences, highlighting the journey from young stardom to adulthood.

Previously, Henningsen starred in the Broadway production Mean Girls: The Musical, where she played Cady Heron, a role that introduced her to her husband, Kyle Selig. Currently, both are navigating their Broadway careers separately, although they have a history of working together on stage. The couple continues to support each other in their respective shows.

In addition to her role in Just In Time, Henningsen is reuniting with Mean Girls creator Tina Fey in the new Netflix series The Four Seasons. The show, which also stars Steve Carell and others, explores the intricacies of familial and marital relationships.

Reflecting on her experiences while filming, Henningsen shared a heartwarming moment where Carell gifted the cast Christmas-themed shirts, promoting a sense of camaraderie among the team, reminiscent of family gatherings.

Henningsen expressed pride in her projects and collaborators, noting the fulfillment she finds in being part of a creative ensemble that inspires her.

In discussing her pre-show routine, she admitted to sharing a dressing room with co-star Gracie Lawrence, which has made her playlist slightly embarrassing given that it often features Lawrence’s band, Lawrence. They enjoy listening to classic tunes, like those of Carole King, while preparing for performances.

As for the quiet moments during the first act, Henningsen shared that she takes the opportunity to reflect and meditate, despite her previous aversion to the practice. She appreciates the tranquility she’s found backstage.

After performances, Henningsen and Selig share evening routines that include dining together and unwinding from their respective shows. She enjoys simple comforts, like grilled cheese sandwiches, which provide a satisfying end to her day.

While discussing her relationship with Selig, she remarked on their supportive dynamic in their current Broadway roles. Both actors have the chance to enjoy a balanced life outside of their careers, which she finds enriching.

Lastly, Henningsen noted her apprehension about performing in front of certain celebrity audience members, particularly Daniel Radcliffe. The thought of seeing him in the audience has her preparing mentally, although she usually prefers to remain unaware of who is watching until after the show concludes.
