Exploring the ESA Astronaut Reserve: Amelie Schoenenwald’s Journey
Introducing Amelie Schoenenwald, a multifaceted professional with a background in biotechnology and a PhD in structural biology. Whether in laboratory settings or the great outdoors, Amelie finds excitement in challenging environments, positioning herself as an enthusiastic candidate for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Astronaut Reserve.
This article is the first in a miniseries that delves into the ESA Astronaut Reserve, highlighting their Astronaut Reserve Training (ART) at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) located near Cologne, Germany. The training program aims to equip participants with the diverse skills necessary for future space missions.
The trainees, referred to as “ARTists,” are engaging with various aspects of space exploration, from familiarizing themselves with the International Space Station to understanding the European space industry and its institutional framework. They are gaining practical knowledge in technical areas such as spacecraft systems and robotics, in addition to honing their understanding of human behavior, conducting scientific research, and undergoing lessons in scuba diving and survival techniques.
