ESA and GSMA Foundry Announce New Funding Initiative for Satellite Integration
During MWC25 Barcelona, the European Space Agency (ESA) introduced a novel funding initiative in collaboration with GSMA Foundry, designed to foster projects that blend satellite and terrestrial network technologies to enhance global connectivity.
This initiative will concentrate on three pivotal areas:
1. Direct-to-Device Connectivity
The first focus area emphasizes direct connectivity, allowing mobile devices to link with satellites without reliance on traditional ground infrastructure. This development aims to expand access to remote areas, bolster emergency services, and help close the digital gap for communities that are typically underserved.
2. Advancement of 6G Technologies
The second area centers on the early development of 6G technologies that integrate satellite-terrestrial convergence into their framework. This includes innovations that cater to ultra-low latency applications, sophisticated Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, and enhanced edge intelligence.
3. Establishment of Hybrid 5G/6G Hubs
The establishment of hybrid testing hubs for 5G and 6G represents the third focus. These hubs will be modeled after the existing 5G/6G Hub situated at ESA’s European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications in Harwell, UK. Such hubs will facilitate the integration of satellite technologies into these networks, providing the industry with a platform for testing various use cases, including those related to autonomous vehicles, smart cities, future logistics, and public safety systems.
Companies and organizations interested in participating are encouraged to submit their proposals by June 30, 2025. Those selected will not only receive funding but also gain opportunities for collaboration with top entities in the telecommunications and space sectors. Furthermore, successful applicants will have the chance to present their innovations at MWC26 and at other events organized by GSMA Foundry.
Antonio Franchi, the Head of the 5G/6G NTN Programme Office at ESA, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We are proud to partner with GSMA Foundry on these new industry challenges and we are excited to increase our investment in the sector. Our aim is to assist both satellite and mobile industries in connecting everyone, everywhere, and at all times, marking a significant stride toward realizing that vision.”
Richard Cockle, Head of GSMA Foundry, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts: “By working together, we can fully unlock the potential of satellite and terrestrial telecommunications networks, leading to innovative solutions that offer substantial advantages to society and industry alike.”
