A new star emerges in the realm of streaming entertainment.

On Wednesday, Amazon’s Prime Video unveiled the inaugural trailer for the upcoming series Étoile, a collaborative creation by acclaimed creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. This series is positioned as one of the platform’s leading contenders for the Emmy Awards in the comedy category this year.

Étoile, meaning “star” in French, showcases a contemporary narrative that unfolds in both New York and Paris. The story revolves around the dancers and artistic teams of two prestigious ballet companies who embark on a bold initiative to rescue their iconic institutions by swapping their most gifted performers. This series marks the second venture into the ballet-themed storytelling for Sherman-Palladino and Palladino, following their well-loved but short-lived series, Bunheads.

In a recent discussion with Vanity Fair, Sherman-Palladino expressed her lifelong passion for dance and the uniqueness of its culture. “My parents instilled in me the importance of perseverance,” she remarked. “Through Bunheads, we experienced a glimpse into the invigorating dance world, which I find truly fascinating.”

The newly released trailer for Étoile presents a comedic insight into the characters. Faced with a decline in relevance, Jack (played by Emmy winner Luke Kirby), the executive director of the Metropolitan Ballet Theater in New York City, and Geneviève (Charlotte Gainsbourg), the interim director of l’Opéra Francais and Le Ballet National, decide to exchange dancers to generate excitement. This swap sets the stage for humorous clashes rooted in cultural differences. The ensemble cast features notable names such as Lou de Laâge, Gideon Glick, and David Alvarez, along with familiar faces from previous Palladino projects, including Kelly Bishop and Yanic Truesdale.

All eight episodes of Étoile are set to premiere on April 24, and as the launch date approaches, conversations about its potential Emmy nominations are gaining traction.

Best Comedy Series

The Étoile series carries heightened expectations following the success of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which secured nominations for Best Comedy Series across all of its five seasons. Despite not yet premiering, Étoile stands as a dark horse in the comedy race, currently ranked 16th in Gold Derby odds. It trails behind several other new series, including The Four Seasons and Agatha All Along. However, the show possesses key advantages that may boost its momentum, not least the loyal audience for the Palladino’s unique storytelling style and the focused promotional efforts from Amazon dedicated to this single project.

Best Comedy Actress

Charlotte Gainsbourg is currently positioned 11th in the odds for Best Comedy Actress, with a chance of climbing into the top 10. This competitive category is home to several high-profile contenders, including past winners like Tina Fey and Uzo Aduba, as well as returning nominees Jean Smart, Ayo Edebiri, and Quinta Brunson. It remains to be seen how Gainsbourg’s performance in Étoile will resonate with award voters in this crowded field.

Best Comedy Actor

Having won an Emmy for his role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Luke Kirby’s presence in Étoile adds an intriguing layer of expectation, especially given the Palladino’s enthusiasm for his talent. Current predictions place him in ninth position among actors, amidst stiff competition from established names like Steve Carell and Ted Danson. If Étoile receives positive reception, Kirby’s stature in the race could readily improve, drawing on his past Emmy success.

Best Writing and Directing

As the first woman to win Emmy Awards for both writing and directing in the same year, Sherman-Palladino emerges as a significant contender for directing accolades in the new series. While her writing achievements have been acknowledged, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel saw limited nominations in that category. It is unclear if Étoile will propel her back into the spotlight for writing, given the current competitive landscape of Emmy nominees.

Other Categories

In addition to primary categories, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel secured various Creative Arts Emmys during its run, spanning areas like music supervision and cinematography, thanks to the contributions from Robin Urdang and David Mullen. These categories could present promising opportunities for Étoile in its inaugural Emmy campaign.

Étoile is set to captivate its audience with all eight episodes premiering on April 24.
