Actor Eric Dane, who is known for his roles in Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, has publicly announced that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as motor neurone disease (MND).

In an exclusive interview with People, the 52-year-old actor expressed gratitude for the support of his family as they face this significant life change together. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” Dane mentioned, emphasizing his desire for privacy during this challenging time.

Dane plays Cal Jacobs, the patriarch of the Jacobs family, on the HBO series Euphoria, which is set to commence filming for its third season shortly. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, beginning in 2006.

His career also includes roles in the fantasy series Charmed as Jason Dean, and as Captain Tom Chandler in The Last Ship. In addition to television, Dane has appeared in numerous films, including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque.

He shares a family with actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and together they have two daughters.

According to information provided by the NHS, MND represents a group of conditions characterized by the deterioration of motor neurons, which are crucial for controlling muscle movement. Almost 90% of those diagnosed with MND experience the ALS variant.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, leads to progressive muscle paralysis. Initial symptoms often include twitching or weakness in limbs, which can progress to difficulties with speech. The impact of the disease extends to the nerve cells in the brain and spine, gradually impairing a person’s ability to communicate, eat, walk, and breathe on their own.

Currently, there is no cure for ALS. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, individuals diagnosed with ALS typically have a life expectancy of three to five years following the diagnosis, although some can live significantly longer.
