About EUREKA DAY
School is in session! The Manhattan Theatre Club is currently showcasing Jonathan Spector’s play Eureka Day, directed by Anna D. Shapiro. The narrative centers around a private elementary school in California known for its emphasis on inclusion. However, things take a turn when a mumps outbreak compels the school community to reevaluate its previously held liberal vaccine policies. As the number of cases grows, the board finds themselves in a difficult position – they must make a decision that will inevitably create division among parents and staff, a choice they had vowed never to make.
Spector has clarified that he conceived the play well before the onset of the COVID pandemic, even though its themes resonate strongly in today’s context. Before making its Broadway debut, Eureka Day premiered at the Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California, during the 2017-2018 season, facilitated by the Originate+Generate program. The play later made its East Coast debut off-Broadway at Walkerspace in 2019, and in 2022, it was presented at the Old Vic in London. The Broadway version introduces a completely new cast, bringing fresh energy to this timely comedy.
