Sao Paulo E-Prix: Mitch Evans Surges to Victory After Dramatic Race
Mitch Evans made an impressive recovery at the Sao Paulo E-Prix, surging from the back of the grid to clinch victory amidst a race marked by two red flags and a terrifying crash involving reigning Formula E champion Pascal Wehrlein. The chaotic start to the 2024/25 season showcased the unpredictable nature of motorsport.
Evans, driving for Jaguar, encountered a powertrain issue in qualifying that left him unable to secure a competitive lap time. However, the race proved to be an ideal opportunity for him to leverage the enhanced Attack Mode performance, alongside several incidents that stirred up the leaderboard.
Having narrowly lost the lead during the closing moments of last season’s Sao Paulo race, Evans faced renewed pressure as he battled with Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa in the final laps. Ultimately, Da Costa finished in second place, while Taylor Barnard, at just 18 years old, marked his place in history as the youngest driver to stand on a Formula E podium after finishing third. Barnard’s achievement came despite a drive-through penalty, with his teammate Sam Bird following in fourth, also recovering from an earlier penalty.
The race kicked off under the new Gen3 Evo rules, allowing for all-wheel-drive capabilities. Oliver Rowland seized the opportunity to take the lead early on, overtaking polesitter Wehrlein at Turn 1. The race briefly paused due to complications after Robin Frijns’s car experienced issues on the grid.
As the race developed, contact between Jake Dennis and Maximilian Gunther resulted in Dennis losing places, ultimately leading to further complications involving a crash between Jake Hughes and Nico Muller on lap two, prompting an investigation into their actions.
Once racing resumed, Rowland maintained his lead while Nick Cassidy quickly activated Attack Mode to enhance his performance. The new power mode demonstrated a remarkable advantage, quickly allowing Rowland to stretch his lead to over 1.5 seconds before competitors began to catch up after utilizing their Attack Modes.
Rowland showcased tenacity by reclaiming the lead despite a brief setback. However, as the laps progressed, team dynamics and strategic decisions came into play, with Wehrlein eventually taking the lead on lap 18, albeit temporarily, as his teammates made their moves through the field.
As a red flag was deployed due to Dennis’s stranded car, the race was reset, leaving da Costa at the front of the grid once again. After the race restarted, Rowland briefly regained the lead but was penalized for excessive power use, allowing Evans, who had opted for a later Attack Mode, to capitalize on the situation.
Tragedy struck when Gunther crashed into the wall, creating a domino effect that saw Wehrlein’s car flip over, fortunately leading to no injuries as he emerged from the wreck unscathed. The second red flag allowed for a refreshing restart, putting Evans at the forefront alongside da Costa and Barnard, who managed to conserve energy during the earlier penalties.
Despite Barnard’s advantageous position, he struggled to advance past the steadfast defenses put up by Evans and da Costa, culminating in a gripping finish to a dramatic race.
