Evolution or Excess: Is It Time for Criminal Minds to Take a Breather with Voit?

There’s an undeniable thrill in the return of *Criminal Minds* with its newest iteration, *Criminal Minds: Evolution*, particularly with the casting of Zach Gilford in a notable role as a serial killer.

The series treads familiar ground often found in crime procedurals: the villain or antihero assists the protagonists in capturing additional evildoers. However, the formula works grounded in its procedural components, and audiences tend to respond positively to this structure.

Voit Slayed in Criminal Minds: Evolution’s First Season … Literally

The inaugural season of *Criminal Minds: Evolution* succeeded in captivating audiences, primarily due to its compelling narrative. The character Voit emerged as a sophisticated UnSub, unleashing chaos upon the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), and the streaming format allowed for creative freedom, leading to a more developed crime drama experience.

This season offered viewers a deep dive into the psyche of this twisted character, who manages to maintain an outwardly normal family life while indulging in horrific acts. The storyline also introduced an intricate network of serial killers, all interconnected in ways that kept viewers engaged.

Voit was crafted as the “White Whale” for much of the season, deviating from the traditional format where cases often conclude neatly by the episode’s end. The finale left fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter when Voit ultimately evaded a grim fate, ensuring the story would continue to unfold.

It’s Too Much of a Good Thing, Y’all

However, the second season brought certain challenges, with some storylines becoming drawn out and others feeling unnecessarily complex. Paradoxically, while one might think endless scenes featuring a captivating character would be a boon, it sometimes felt like too much of a good thing.

Despite my admiration for Gilford, his character’s relentless presence became overwhelming. The repeated confrontations between Voit and Rossi, along with his manipulative antics in prison, started to detract from the overall balance of the show.

Initially, Voit was an engaging adversary, yet the overwhelming focus on him in the second season seemed to overshadow the BAU’s dynamics and capabilities. The narrative risked reducing the unit’s effectiveness, instead of showcasing their investigative prowess.

Steal My Heart But Not the BAU Spotlight, Babe

It’s clear that Gilford relishes his role, and his performance is commendable. Nevertheless, it’s essential for the show to maintain a balance between highlighting Voit’s character and allowing the BAU to shine independently.

While standout moments, such as Baby Girl’s fierce confrontation with Voit, are thrilling, they felt unearned within the season’s context. The BAU seemed to spend more time reacting to Voit rather than executing their own strategies, leading to a disjointed narrative.

At times, it felt necessary to suspend disbelief regarding Voit’s frequent involvement in significant events, as his omnipresence began to feel unrealistic, with his influence weighing heavily on the unit’s decisions.

Balance the Baddie Better in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season Three, Por Favor

Voit’s character seems to be evolving into a central figure akin to Red Reddington from *The Blacklist*, where audiences expect the lead to carry the narrative. However, *Criminal Minds* is a long-standing series with a rich ensemble cast that should equally feature the beloved characters who existed prior to Voit’s introduction.

The anticipation for a third season is palpable, especially after the season finale hinted at intriguing developments ahead. While fans are aware of Voit’s narrative immunity, it’s crucial for the show to exhibit restraint and allow for other characters to share the spotlight.

As viewers, many may resonate with the sentiment of there being an overload of Voit this season. It would be interesting to hear if others feel similarly. Join the conversation and share your thoughts.
