A former member of Canada’s political landscape is under suspicion for allegedly attempting to sway the operations of Parliament in favor of a foreign government, as revealed in documents made public by the foreign interference commission on Friday.
The documents did not disclose specific details about the parliamentarian, including whether they were part of the Senate or House of Commons, nor did they mention their political affiliation or the country purportedly involved.
This revelation marks a previously unreported case of direct foreign interference within Canada’s democratic processes.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), in collaboration with various security and intelligence entities, constructed a list of six prominent allegations of foreign interference that have surfaced in recent years.
Of these instances, four were examined in detail during Justice Marie-Josée Hogue’s inquiry, which focused on foreign influence in the federal elections of 2019 and 2021. The other two instances, however, were previously unknown to the public.
The list not only highlights the parliamentarian accused of covertly acting for a foreign government but also includes an incident where another state attempted to obstruct the election of a Liberal MP.
“Reports suggest that a foreign government engaged in multiple activities aimed at diminishing the electoral prospects of a particular Liberal candidate,” the documents stated. “The suspicion is that this foreign government aimed to undermine the candidate due to their support for issues viewed as conflicting with the foreign government’s interests.”
Further developments are anticipated.
