Najee Harris Signs with Los Angeles Chargers After Steelers Tenure

Najee Harris, a highly regarded prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers as their first-round pick. However, after four seasons with the team, the Pro Bowl running back is set to embark on a new chapter, having recently signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

In his first press conference with the Chargers, Harris reflected on his time with the Steelers, acknowledging that he sensed his departure was on the horizon.

Realizations and Changes

“Coach T [Mike Tomlin], and I have always had a close relationship, and I began to understand the direction things were heading,” Harris explained. “This wasn’t part of my original plan, but sometimes the business aspect of the NFL takes precedence.”

Last month, during the NFL Scouting Combine, Steelers general manager Omar Khan hinted that the organization had not entirely ruled out the possibility of Harris returning. However, the running back had already come to terms with the nature of the league.

“It’s a business, and Coach T was clear about that from my rookie year,” Harris noted. “Even in my final season, he reminded me about the business side of things. I realized midseason that this would likely be my last year with Pittsburgh.”

Consistent Performance Amidst Challenges

Throughout his time in Pittsburgh, Harris demonstrated a remarkable level of consistency by surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in each of his four seasons. Not only did he maintain sturdy performance, but he also showcased resilience, appearing in all 68 regular-season games during his tenure.

Despite his achievements, Harris faced challenges due to the fluctuating offensive line and changes at the quarterback position. For instance, he voiced his concerns following a tough loss to the Cleveland Browns in 2023, after which the Steelers parted ways with offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

The Steelers ultimately chose not to exercise Harris’ fifth-year option, leading to his exit from the team.

New Beginnings in Los Angeles

Transitioning to the Chargers, Harris expressed enthusiasm about the talent present in Los Angeles, particularly praising the strength of their offensive line.

“The integrity and identity of an offensive line determine the success of the plays,” he commented. “I’ve observed how they work together and the quality of their finish. Their offensive line is impressive, and I look forward to making the most of it.”

In total, Harris accumulated 4,312 rushing yards during his time with the Steelers, along with an additional 83 yards accrued across three playoff appearances.

As he takes the field with the Chargers, both Harris and the team hope for a successful new beginning in the 2024 season.
