Study Links Excessive Screen Time in Preschoolers to Poor Sleep and Behavioral Issues

A recent study indicates that extensive screen time among preschool children is significantly associated with negative impacts on sleep quality, which in turn may exacerbate issues such as poor attention, hyperactivity, and mood instability.

Published in Early Child Development and Care, this peer-reviewed research draws on data collected from experts in China and Canada, revealing strong correlations between screen usage, emotional symptoms, and reduced sleep quality.

The study also highlights that improved sleep quality is linked to a decrease in hyperactive attention problems and peer-related issues. The findings suggest that sleep acts as an intermediary factor between screen time and both hyperactivity and emotional challenges.

“The presence of excessive screen time can keep preschoolers’ brains in a state of hyperactivity, which negatively influences their sleep,” notes Professor Yan Li from Shanghai Normal University, who is the study’s corresponding author.

Professor Li elaborates on the issue: “Delayed bedtimes due to screen exposure and disruptions in sleep patterns, driven by overstimulation and blue light, can hinder sleep. Moreover, screen use might encroach on time that could otherwise be spent sleeping, elevating both physical and psychological arousal, which can complicate the process of falling asleep.” Lead author Shujin Zhou, a psychologist, reinforces this view with her insights.

The research involved surveying mothers of 571 preschoolers aged three to six years across seven public kindergartens in Shanghai. Mothers provided detailed accounts of their children’s daily screen time, behavioral issues—including hyperactivity, emotional distress, and social difficulties—and assessments of sleep quality and duration.

“Our findings suggest a positive feedback loop where increased screen time worsens sleep disturbances, leading to heightened risks of hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression,” remarks Dr. Bowen Xiao, a co-author specializing in children’s socio-emotional development and psychopathology at Carleton University in Canada.

The research team, which includes experts from Shenzhen Xili Kindergarten, believes their findings may inform future interventions and treatments for concerns associated with screen time in early childhood context.

“Recognizing the impact of screen usage on preschool children, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, is critical,” states Dr. Zhou. “The study’s implications are two-fold: limiting screen time may reduce behavioral challenges and improve sleep quality, while targeted sleep interventions could help mitigate the adverse impacts of screen exposure.”

Despite these important revelations, the study does acknowledge limitations, primarily that the data collected from mothers may include subjective biases. To address this, researchers recommend that future studies employ objective measures to assess sleep quality.
