Obsidian Entertainment has expressed satisfaction with the sales performance of Avowed, although specific sales figures have not been disclosed. In a recent reflection on the game’s development journey, director Carrie Patel indicated a desire to explore the game’s universe further.
As reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Avowed faced significant challenges during its development, initially starting in 2018 before the project was scrapped. Following the acquisition of Obsidian by Xbox, the project was relaunched with a revised vision and a new director. Despite downsizing and several changes, Obsidian has indicated a positive reception to the game’s performance in sales, though no precise data was provided. Patel, who took over leadership after the reboot, expressed optimism about the potential for future titles that could be built in the same universe and affirmed her enthusiasm for expanding the lore of Eora.
Avowed marks Obsidian’s inaugural title under the Xbox Game Studios label. Patel emphasized the growth and experience gained by the development team working on Avowed, suggesting they are now well-equipped to pursue sequels or new projects that delve deeper into the rich Eora setting. This game represents the third entry in the universe first introduced in Pillars of Eternity, continuing a legacy that holds the promise of exploring unexplored facets of this intriguing world. While Patel did not specify the direction future games could take, possibilities range from action RPGs akin to those produced by Bethesda to more traditional computer RPGs reminiscent of Pillars of Eternity.
However, the development of any additional Eora-based titles will require time, as Obsidian is currently focused on delivering The Outer Worlds 2, targeted for release later this year.
Despite some limitations on platforms like Steam, where Avowed recorded a peak player count of around 18,000, its implication as a staple on Game Pass and consoles remains strong. Microsoft has been actively promoting Game Pass while making significant strides in offering previously exclusive titles across various platforms, including PlayStation.
Currently, Avowed is not available on Sony consoles, yet with moves like Forza Horizon 5 transitioning to the PS5, it appears inevitable that Obsidian’s action RPG may find its way to these platforms in the future.
