Ryan Coogler’s Ambitious Reboot of The X-Files: Gillian Anderson’s Possible Return

Ryan Coogler is currently working on a reboot of the iconic series The X-Files, and there are discussions regarding the involvement of Gillian Anderson, who famously portrayed FBI Special Agent Dana Scully throughout the show’s original 11-season run on Fox. Coogler, known for his recent film Sinners, revealed in a recent episode of Last Podcast on the Left that he is eager to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved franchise.

Coogler expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m working on X-Files, bro. That’s what’s immediately next. I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.” His commitment to delivering a product that appeals both to longtime fans and a new audience is evident.

When asked about the potential for Anderson to reprise her role, Coogler provided an optimistic update, saying, “I’ve spoken to the great Gillian Anderson. She’s amazing. She’s incredible. You know, fingers crossed there.” He reaffirmed his dedication to crafting a high-quality reboot that honors the original series while possibly expanding its fanbase.

The notion of Coogler’s involvement with The X-Files first surfaced two years ago after the show’s creator, Chris Carter, announced that Coogler would be looking to reinterpret the series with a “diverse cast.” This forward-looking approach reflects the evolving landscape of television and film, emphasizing inclusivity while aiming to retain the essence of what made the show a classic.

Anderson, in a previous interview a year ago, indicated her openness to the reboot during a conversation on TODAY. She shared her thoughts on Coogler’s vision, saying, “now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen. I think he’s a bit of a genius.”

Anderson expressed cautious optimism, adding, “There’s a chance it will happen. Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. But I’m not saying no because I think he’s really cool, and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.” Her remarks emphasize a blend of excitement and uncertainty that often accompanies discussions about reviving beloved franchises.

With both Coogler’s visionary plans and Anderson’s enthusiastic response, the potential for a new take on The X-Files looks promising. As the project develops, fans will be eager to see how the narrative evolves and who will ultimately join the cast in this revitalized rendition of a cultural phenomenon.
