Upcoming Season of American Idol Promises Emotional Moments
American Idol is set to make its return to ABC for Season 23 on March 9, with fans getting an early glimpse following the Oscars telecast this weekend. In a touching audition preview, contestant Slater Nalley captivates the judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan with a heartfelt performance that brings them to tears.
Slater is introduced by his high school English teacher, Mrs. Davis, who shares a poignant backstory. She recounts how Slater wrote a song in memory of her late son, Carter Davis, who tragically passed away eight years ago. Mrs. Davis explains, “He heard my story and combined it with a poem I had written. Two weeks later, he returned with a song inspired by that poem, which he will perform today.”
In the audition room, Slater, a 17-year-old from Atlanta, expresses his gratitude toward Mrs. Davis, stating, “I’m very thankful for [Mrs. Davis] and I’m glad that I could offer something meaningful to her.” He introduces his song, “Traces of You,” as the most profound piece he has ever composed. Even though Slater did not know Carter personally, he felt a deep connection while listening to Mrs. Davis talk about him. “I knew that I needed to do something,” he explains, describing how he transformed his thoughts into lyrics.
Mrs. Davis shares her sentiments, noting, “For Slater to have not known Carter and yet to write such a heartfelt song — it encapsulates the essence of the person I deeply miss. Our faith has guided us through this loss, shining a light of hope.”
As Slater shares his emotional song, Carrie Underwood is visibly moved, reaching for tissues to dry her tears. She remarks, “Every listener can connect that memory to someone meaningful in their life. I couldn’t have imagined a better performance.” Lionel echoes her feelings, highlighting a particular lyric, “Your life was like a river running home,” as especially powerful. Luke advises Slater to continue performing openly and authentically, believing that success will follow.
Ultimately, Slater receives his coveted golden ticket to Hollywood, marking a significant milestone in his journey. Fans can catch a special 30-minute preview of American Idol after the Oscars on March 2 at 10:30 p.m. ET. Since its debut on ABC, the show has consistently been a leading unscripted series in viewership. The official premiere of Season 23 will feature a two-hour episode on March 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by availability on Hulu the next day.
