The Intense Competition of The Amazing Race: A Close Call for Jeff “Pops” and Jeff Bailey, Jr.
The sixth leg of The Amazing Race showcased one of the most tightly contested finishes in the show’s history, as brothers Nick and Mike Fiorito narrowly edged out father-son team Jeff “Pops” and Jeff Bailey, Jr. to reach the Pit Stop.
This episode, hosted by Phil Keoghan, introduced a Fast Forward opportunity, allowing one team to bypass the rest of the leg entirely and head straight to the Pit Stop. Gamers Carson McCalley and Jack Dodge seized the chance, claiming victory for this leg and winning an Alaskan cruise. The remaining seven teams fought fiercely for positioning, but in the end, Pops and Jeff fell just short.
Despite their elimination, the episode sparked fond memories for the duo. “Several factors contributed to our early exit,” Jeff shared in an interview with Gold Derby. “While luck wasn’t on our side during the race, it was still an incredible experience. One of my favorite moments was when we were at the airport, all sitting together and enjoying meals; that was truly special. Arriving in the desert was another highlight as we shared meals and moments under the stars with the other teams, which is rare during the race.”
In a reflection on their journey, Jeff pointed out that one moment broadcasted might not have been as pivotal as it seemed. As they sprinted for the final train, the doors closed just before Jeff reached them. Although accurately depicted, he noted that getting on the train would have been impossible due to their film crew. “Given that we were always being filmed, making that shot meant we couldn’t board. It was a tense wait for the next train, which allowed Nick and Mike to catch up and ultimately take the lead,” he explained.
Pops described the experience of racing alongside his son as a “dream come true.” The icing on the cake was the tandem skydiving they enjoyed on the final day. “It was exhilarating to jump and then immediately engage in the race after landing. I felt like Superman as I flew down, having an absolute blast with my son,” he recounted.
At the age of 65, Pops has garnered significant attention for his impressive fitness, attributed primarily to push-ups. “I’ve always been physically active, working outdoors, and push-ups have been a staple since high school. It’s not something I consciously tried to achieve; it’s just been part of my routine,” he stated.
In contrast, Jeff acknowledged the challenges he faces in maintaining a similar physique. “I’ve always looked up to my dad and strive to emulate him. I focus on my workouts and diet because I admire his lifestyle and hope my son adopts that kind of mindset in the future,” he said.
The next installment of The Amazing Race will premiere on Wednesday, April 16, on CBS.
