Broadway’s Wicked recently introduced Lencia Kebede as its new Elphaba. Kebede has made history by becoming the first Black actress to portray the iconic character full-time on Broadway, captivating audiences with her performance of “The Wizard and I.” She graces the stage alongside a stellar cast, including Allie Trimm as Glinda, NaTasha Yvette Williams as Madame Morrible, Jenna Bainbridge as Nessarose, and Daniel Quadrino as Boq.

Born to Ethiopian parents in the United States, Kebede is a proud first-generation Ethiopian-American. She earned her degree in Diplomacy & World Affairs, with a minor in Politics, from Occidental College. Her journey to Wicked includes a prominent role in Hamilton as Angelica Schuyler and a national and international tour of Rent, where she played Joanne. Kebede also has the distinction of having provided backup vocals for Beyoncé Knowles Carter.

The Broadway production of Wicked also features Brad Oscar as the Wizard, Jordan Litz as Fiyero, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond. Now in its 21st year, the production holds the distinguished title of the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history. Excitingly, on November 22, 2024, a film adaptation of Wicked premiered, quickly establishing itself as the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical.

The story of Wicked unfolds before Dorothy’s arrival, centering on a remarkable young woman with emerald-green skin. This character is intelligent, passionate, and often misunderstood, gifted with extraordinary abilities. Her journey transforms from a rivalry with a charmingly popular blonde into a profound friendship, leading to the harsh societal labels of “good” and “Wicked” imposed by the world around them.
