Apple TV+ Show “Disclaimer” Concludes with Shocking Finale

In a gripping season finale this week, the Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” directed by Alfonso Cuarón, delivered a plot twist that recontextualizes the entire narrative. Central to this twist is a pivotal and controversial sex scene, which has drawn significant attention.

The show, which is adapted from Renée Knight’s 2015 novel, stars the acclaimed Cate Blanchett in the role of Catherine Ravenscroft, a successful documentary filmmaker thrust into chaos when she receives a novel featuring her as the main character. The book tells the story of a scandalous affair between a mother and a teenage boy during a vacation in Italy, culminating in the boy’s tragic death as he tries to save the child of the woman he loves.

This novel, titled “The Perfect Stranger,” is authored by Stephen Brigstocke, portrayed by Kevin Kline. Brigstocke, a retired schoolteacher, harbors deep resentment toward Catherine after discovering intimate photographs of her in the belongings of his late son, Jonathan, the boy at the center of the tale. Jonathan’s mother, Nancy, had long accused Catherine of having an affair with her son, believing that his love for Catherine drove him to his heroic downfall.

“Disclaimer” employs a non-linear storytelling technique, gradually revealing the relationship’s complexities through flashbacks that suggest Catherine was the seducer. However, as the series progresses, these flashbacks are shown to be deceptive, leading viewers to question the validity of Nancy’s interpretations.

During the penultimate episode, the narrative shifts dramatically when Catherine confronts Stephen, insisting that the story presented in the book is not true. The finale then uncovers the horror of her past: rather than a consensual affair, Catherine reveals that Jonathan assaulted her. The photos, which Nancy deemed scandalous, were instead taken during a traumatic experience where Jonathan raped Catherine, who faced a choice to destroy evidence of the crime following his death.

Unraveling the Disturbing Truth

As the finale unfolds, Stephen grapples with his conception of Jonathan, at first unable to accept the possibility that his son could be a rapist. His quest for vengeance leads him away from Catherine, who chooses to sever ties with her husband, who had already left her after believing the fabricated story of an affair. Instead, she seeks to reconcile with her son, Nicholas, who has faced his own struggles with addiction.

The Controversial Scene: Dual Perspectives

The controversial sex scene pivotal to both the narrative and the twist was filmed twice by actress Leila George, capturing both the imagined affair and the reality of the assault. Cuarón made it clear to George that the scenes were integral to the storyline, and she worked closely with intimacy coordinator Samantha Murray to ensure the filming was respectful and safe.

George emphasized that these scenes were crafted with care and purpose. “The whole story revolves around this evening,” she remarked, affirming the necessity of portraying the events truthfully and sensitively.

A Whirlwind Journey to the Role

Leila George’s casting was a serendipitous event, initiated by an unexpected phone call from Cuarón. With no script available at the time, George quickly read the source material and had to prepare for her role on very short notice, ultimately diving into a structured filming process in Italy shortly thereafter. Reflecting on her experience, she described it as one of the best opportunities she has ever received.

The season finale of “Disclaimer” is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
