Transforming a 6,000 Square Foot Home into a Cozy Oasis
Lavelle, an alumnus of the Parsons School of Design, has made a name for herself in the interior design industry after her tenure at David Scott Interiors. She faced the challenge of reimagining a vast 6,000-square-foot residence to evoke warmth and comfort for its inhabitants. “I was nervous,” Lavelle recalled about this ambitious project. “But I said, ‘I’m going to prove that we can turn this into a cozy oasis.’”
To achieve her vision, Lavelle collaborated closely with architect Steven Helmes from The Helmes Group. Their initial plan involved expanding the ground floor by 800 square feet, which allowed for the creation of a modern kitchen featuring a central island and an adjoining sitting area. This space was designed to encourage family interaction while meals were being prepared. Additionally, Lavelle undertook significant enhancements to the front and back patios, making them more inviting for both relaxation and social gatherings.
While the exterior of the home retained its classic Georgian Revival characteristics—complete with elegant sash windows, a pitched roof, and iconic Grecian columns—the interiors underwent a creative transformation. Lavelle envisioned a space that exuded comfort and character, stating she aimed for “a layered, comfortable space where you don’t know what time period you’re in.” The result is a harmonious blend of styles that invites occupants and guests alike to feel at ease.
The newly renovated kitchen, part of the home’s substantial addition, now includes a sitting area, as well as practical spaces such as a laundry room and mudroom, enriching the functionality of this family home.
