Chevy Chase Village: A Historical Home Reimagined for Modern Living
Steeped in history and featuring picturesque, walkable streets, Chevy Chase Village in Maryland is a charming community situated on the outskirts of Washington, DC. This inviting environment has become the ideal backdrop for Jennifer Skalka Tullumello and her husband, Drew, as they establish their family roots. As they set out to find a new home, both a writer and a lawyer by profession, the couple sought a residence that echoed the rich history of the area while stepping away from conventional Washingtonian architectural styles.
Their choice fell on a Queen Anne-style home built in 1905, characterized by its elegant white exterior, an expansive wraparound porch, and distinctive Craftsman-style windows. This charming residence, remaining in the hands of only a few families since its construction, exuded a welcoming atmosphere. Tullumello expressed their vision succinctly: “We wanted a house that had a lot of love in it, somewhere our children could build happy childhood memories.” With their kids aged 7 and 11, this home promised to be a nurturing environment for their family.
To breathe new life into their historic home, the couple collaborated closely with designer Nina Farmer from the AD PRO Directory. Farmer’s expertise in restoring and modernizing historic residences was instrumental in guiding the project. Tullumello remarked on Farmer’s remarkable ability to juxtapose historical elements with contemporary needs for young families. “She really understands how to use color and texture and period pieces from across decades to let the home’s natural charm shine through,” she said.
Further enhancing the transformation, Nina Farmer Interiors partnered with the architecture firm Wouter Boer and the construction company Zantzinger. Together, they united design and craftsmanship to ensure that the home retained its historical essence while accommodating the contemporary lifestyle needs of the Tullumello family.
The collaborative efforts of skilled professionals and the vision of the family promise this historic residence will not only serve as a home but also as a place for cherished memories to unfold.
