Transforming a Historic Home with Modern Elegance
In a recent renovation, clients and their designers were enamored with what the lead designer, Pennoyer, described as the “stunning Hollywood Regency character” of their residence. The property features impressive architectural details, such as towering ionic columns that support a stylish portico and an expansive terrace at the rear. A stately motor court, complete with a flowing fountain, adds to the exterior’s inviting allure. Notably, Art Deco-inspired brickwork enhances the whimsical nature of the façade. According to Pennoyer, these playful elements of the exterior hinted that the interior redesign could embrace a lively touch as well.
Despite the charm of the house, its early-20th-century creators had not fully incorporated the Regency spirit into the interior spaces. “That essence hadn’t been translated indoors,” Pennoyer remarked. “However, we found ways to incorporate it while maintaining a sense of balance.” Successful upgrades included a cast-glass bolection mantelpiece in the lounge, intricate tray and vaulted ceilings throughout various entertaining areas, and fluted-plaster wainscoting in the living room. Additionally, hand-painted églomisé mirror-paneled doors by artist Miriam Ellner and a gracefully curving staircase add layers of sophistication. This staircase, now centrally located in a sun-drenched area where key axes of the house converge, serves as both a focal point and an eye-catching installation visible from multiple vantage points within and outside the home.
Cathey, another designer involved in the project, explained the strategy behind the color palette: “We aimed for a semi-neutral main living room while infusing the adjacent spaces with more vibrant colors and themes.” The millwork, designed by Pennoyer, was painted in Benjamin Moore’s creamy White Chocolate, which lent a contemporary and inviting character to the home’s interior. Pennoyer described the plasterwork as a unique element that provides character while stepping away from traditional paneled finishes.
Custom club chairs, upholstered in materials from Holland & Sherry, feature prominently in the design. Adding to the aesthetic, the area rugs were designed by Oscar de la Renta for Elson & Company, reflecting the homeowner’s taste for sophisticated and luxurious textiles.
Pennoyer also sought to enhance the visual flow of the home, aiming to create clear sight lines that invite the eye to travel effortlessly from one end of the residence to the other. “Given the size of the house, clarity and openness were essential to make it feel welcoming,” he said. Meanwhile, Cathey drew inspiration not only from the architectural integrity but also from the homeowner’s personal style, which embraces bold patterns, rich jewel tones, and refined fabrics. “Her elegant aesthetic is both classic and daring,” Cathey noted. This distinctive design philosophy is especially evident in the trio of expansive ground-floor entertaining spaces: a spacious living room, complemented by cozy lounge and dining areas, all accessible from the grand two-part entry gallery.
