The 46th edition of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase is set to run from April 26 to May 26, featuring the innovative designs of 19 interior and landscape design firms. This year’s event transforms a remarkable five-level, 9,400-square-foot residence located in the prestigious Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. This area provides a fitting backdrop for such an impressive display of creative talent, although the house itself has undergone significant transformation since its inception.

Originally constructed in 1902, the building was designed as a three-flat Tudor Revival by architect Thomas Paterson Ross, intended as a multi-family investment for Carrie Gummer, whose banker husband, Charles, passed away prematurely. Throughout the following decades, the property housed various affluent tenants, including bachelors and widows. The home changed ownership several times before being acquired by real estate entrepreneur Lyman Potter, who inhabited one of the units with his family while renting out the others until the 1960s.

In recent decades, the house has undergone a dramatic design evolution. A complete overhaul in 2009 by architect Louis Felthouse and designer Matthew MacCaul Turner obliterated any remaining Tudor elements. Consequently, the exterior was transformed to feature a classically-inspired French limestone facade, while the interior reconfiguration allowed it to function as a single-family residence. Although the home’s contemporary design pays homage to its Tudor roots, significant changes have modernized its character. The structure now boasts eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms, in addition to a breathtaking multi-level rooftop terrace, which provides stunning views of the city and San Francisco Bay.

This year, the San Francisco Decorator Showcase continues its tradition of supporting local education, with over $19 million raised for the San Francisco University High School’s financial aid program since its inception in 1977. While the impressive vistas are undoubtedly a highlight, it is the reimagined spaces created by top designers that capture the audience’s attention and hint at future design trends. For instance, Geoffrey De Sousa’s revival of the wood-paneled living room features a large photograph by renowned filmmaker and installation artist Sir Isaac Julien, complemented by a luxurious blush pink curled-arm sofa paired with green boucle Todo Modo slipper chairs, designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte for the Louvre in 1993. This notable seating allows patrons to effortlessly switch their view to artworks on different walls, enhancing the overall experience.

This showcase promises to be an enlightening exploration of design possibilities, as each space reflects the unique vision and expertise of its creator, setting the stage for upcoming trends in the world of interior and landscape design.
