A Journey Through Design: Paloma Elsesser’s Eclectic Brooklyn Townhouse
Paloma Elsesser’s Brooklyn townhouse is a testament to her unique aesthetic sensibility, blending unexpected elements that elevate the design of each room. Identifying as a collector, Elsesser has a passion for diverse styles, drawing inspiration from Milanese design, North African ikats, and various African sculptures. On a recent trip to Morocco, she curated her space further by sourcing Tuareg mats from local souks. “I’ve never been someone to simply lounge in a hotel room; I seek out the cultural and creative essence of every place I visit,” she shares.
Elsesser’s years in the fashion industry have sharpened her eye for detail. Fellow designer Hodde remarks on her ability to express her preferences clearly and decisively. A case in point is her desire for an animal-print sofa in her media room, which needed to strike a balance between chic and unique—eventually leading to their selection of Schumacher’s Ze’bre Épinglé. The choice complements an inviting space filled with cork-clad walls, a chinoiserie cocktail table, and artwork evocative of the famed Paris apartment of Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent.
The media room showcases luxurious cork paneling from Phillip Jeffries, featuring a custom animal-print sofa adjacent to contemporary seating by Pascal Mourgue for Ligne Roset. The room is further enhanced by a Nathalie Du Pasquier painting and a vintage Art Nouveau plant stand. Notable decorative pieces include sconces by Ernesto Valabrega, nesting tables from Liz O’Brien, and decorative items that Elsesser sourced during her travels, like unique beads from Morocco.
The energy in Elsesser’s home varies from room to room, yet the overall design maintains a harmonious flow. Upstairs, the tranquil sleeping quarters contrast beautifully with a stunning bathroom that showcases marble, mirrors, and walnut paneling in a strikingly cohesive arrangement. Adjacent to the bathroom, a minimalist closet complements the luxurious environment with sleek cabinetry that houses an extensive wardrobe. “This truly reflects pure glamour,” remarks Rockwell, highlighting features like a Japanese Art Deco-inspired carpet and an elegant silk pendant featuring a distinct custom tassel from Samuel & Sons. “This is undoubtedly the closet of a supermodel.”
As she settles into her dream home, Elsesser reflects on her journey of personal growth amidst the transformation of her living space. “I feel like I became a woman here,” she confides, sharing insights about navigating challenges like breakups, collaborating with contractors, and asserting agency over her life and finances. “While it’s sometimes daunting, it’s also incredibly liberating.”
