Chappell Roan has proclaimed, “Giddy up, ya’ll.” On March 13, the Grammy-award-winning artist debuted her latest single, “The Giver,” which is anticipated to be part of her upcoming studio album. In a notable musical pivot, she, much like Beyoncé, has embraced elements of country music.
In an insightful Instagram post, Roan shared her affection for the genre. “Country music holds a special place in my heart,” she expressed, reminiscing about her experiences growing up surrounded by its sounds, from school bus rides to bonfires and karaoke nights.
While Roan is exploring country sounds, she clarifies that her entire album will not be strictly country. Echoing Bey’s innovative style, she noted, “At the moment, I’m creating songs that evoke joy and excitement.” She emphasized her unique approach, saying, “‘The Giver’ reflects my interpretation of country, with a playful nod to the genre’s traditions, while adding my personal flair to it.”
In “The Giver,” similar to her previous single “Good Luck, Babe!,” Roan crafts lyrics about a woman who might be struggling with her feelings for the artist. Instead of pleading for acceptance, Roan seduces, highlighting her potential to satisfy desires in ways that contrast with conventional expectations tied to masculinity, all while subtly weaving in both country and risqué themes.
She comments humorously, “In this strip-mall town of dreams, good luck finding a man who can rhinestone cowgirl all night long,” a clever reference that pays homage to Glen Campbell’s classic hit “Rhinestone Cowboy”, while alluding to intimate moments as well.
Roan previously showcased “The Giver” on Saturday Night Live, dressed in cowboy boots and Western attire, setting the stage for her vibrant live performance style. The single resonates with sounds reminiscent of crossover icons like Shania Twain and The Chicks, merging country-inspired banjos and harmonicas with engaging pop melodies.
Twain herself seemed to endorse Roan’s venture, commenting enthusiastically on her social media post, “Gay yodelling forever !!”
