The definition of “best” can vary significantly based on context. Living in a barn originally constructed in the 1780s means continual improvements and modifications are necessary. However, if we gauge “best” by comfort and enjoyment, the space I cherish the most is my home office, situated in a building that formerly served as a pigeon house. We’ve affectionately named it the Pigeon House. This structure includes a quaint garden shed with its own entrance. We opted to insulate the shed and embellish it with rustic pine finishes, allowing us to create an additional cozy area in my office that houses storage, my printer, and other essentials. There’s even a small bathroom featuring a composting toilet. This delightful arrangement provides a sense of discovered space, a rare find indeed. I also have aspirations for a new garden shed, or perhaps I will invest in a beautiful BC Greenhouse.
Are there any simple or cost-effective design changes you wish you had known earlier?
Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a game changer.
What are your preferred sheets?
Piglet in Bed produces incredibly soft linen sheets available in a variety of beautiful shades. I have a particular fondness for their Atlantic blue, but their playful plaids also complement our farmhouse aesthetic while adding a modern touch. Additionally, I am fond of every blanket made by Schoolhouse.
What is your favorite bedroom paint color?
White ranks as my favorite for bedroom walls. I appreciate the clean, bright, and serene atmosphere it creates.
What is your somewhat controversial design belief?
Did you catch my preference for white paint?
What is your essential kitchen tool?
We rely on a unique wooden utensil that combines the features of a spatula and a spoon—what I like to call a spoontula. Its shape is fantastic, and it’s a joy to use. I aspire to enhance my woodworking skills to craft more of these and share them with friends.
How would you describe your design style?
We aim for a Japandi-inspired look: minimalist, yet with vibrant colors and patterns sprinkled throughout.
Which item from your closet do you frequently wear?
I am enamored with Outerknown blanket shirts. They make for an ideal layering piece, versatile enough for both casual and dressed-up looks. I wish I had a collection of ten!
What is your favorite design store, either online or locally?
My friend Meg operates Modern Love in Frenchtown, NJ, which is a treasure trove of our dream items. Every visit yields delightful finds, like Japanese stationery or exquisitely woven baskets that we just have to have.
What are you currently coveting?
My friend Clare V is collaborating with Schoolhouse, and their partnership features stunning pieces that I adore, particularly a bright red lamp that seems to be straight out of a whimsical cartoon. It’s irresistibly cute.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
At present, I am outfitting a linen closet with tongue-and-groove cedar and constructing cedar shelves. Moreover, we are transforming a small room into a cozy “snug,” complete with a raised daybed crafted from an old twin bed frame. I’m also dedicated to mastering 3D computer rendering to aid in visualizing upcoming home and garden initiatives, though progress has been quite slow as it’s a challenging endeavor for me.
