Ontario Police Renew Efforts in Long-Standing Cold Case of Robert William Commu

Almost thirty years have passed since the enigmatic disappearance of Robert William Commu, prompting the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to intensify their investigation into this unresolved case.

Commu frequently visited areas near the Grand River and was reported missing when he did not return home in 1996. Despite thorough searches conducted during that period, no signs of him were discovered. His last known sighting was on March 31, 1996, in South Dumfries Township, a quaint community in southwestern Ontario.

Reports received by the Brant County OPP indicate that Commu was seen shortly before his disappearance in the company of two unidentified men driving a pickup truck.

This year, authorities have pursued various leads, but thus far, they have not succeeded in uncovering new information. However, advancements in technology have inspired hope that DNA analysis might provide crucial breakthroughs.

According to Constable Jonathan Bueckert, investigators have collected DNA samples from Commu’s family which are being stored in a database for future reference.

“These samples enable us to identify individuals should a match ever be established,” Bueckert explained.

Since the day Commu went missing, investigators have engaged with family members, colleagues, and acquaintances, yet the case still remains a mystery.

In addition to law enforcement efforts, a Facebook group named “Help Find Robert Commu” has emerged as a platform for friends and family to share stories and increase awareness about his case.

Amanda Whitelaw, a relative of Commu, conveyed the profound impact he had on her life in a heartfelt message on the group. “You were a father figure to me, and you took me out of bad situations,” she wrote, expressing her hope that he might one day return to clarify his fate.

At the time of his disappearance, Commu was characterized as being six feet tall, weighing around 180 pounds, with long brown hair and blue eyes. He was notably adorned with a tattoo of a lion with wings on his upper right arm and was last seen wearing a distinctive white leather jacket that had black sleeves and a red maple leaf emblem on the back.

The police are actively collaborating with the National Centre for Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains and are making use of modern technologies such as GPS tracking and social media platforms to advance their inquiry.

Authorities are urging anyone with potential information regarding Commu’s disappearance to reach out to the police. Individuals who wish to provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
