Authorities have initiated an investigation following a violent assault on Urfan Sharif, the father of the murdered schoolgirl, Sara Sharif, while he was incarcerated. The incident occurred on New Year’s Day at HMP Belmarsh, where Sharif was attacked by two fellow inmates.

Sharif, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his daughter, sustained significant injuries from the attack. Reports indicate that the inmates used a makeshift weapon crafted from a tuna can lid, inflicting cuts to Sharif’s neck and face during the ambush.

Despite the severity of his injuries, it was confirmed that he did not require external medical assistance and was treated in the prison’s healthcare unit instead.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: “An inquiry is underway regarding an assault that occurred at HMP Belmarsh on January 1, involving a 43-year-old man who suffered non-life threatening injuries.” A representative from the Prison Service emphasized the ongoing investigation and refrained from providing additional comments.

In December, Urfan Sharif and Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, were sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in Sara’s murder, which was described by the court as featuring years of severe abuse and torture.

Sources reported that the attack on Sharif was premeditated, with one insider commenting: “He was badly injured, and his condition remains serious. He was fortunate to survive and will carry permanent scars from this incident.” Additionally, it was noted that the prison’s management had implemented measures to protect Sharif due to the notoriety surrounding his case.

Inmates expressed displeasure at his presence among them. Observations revealed that many prisoners, even those convicted of serious offenses, have a particular disdain for individuals who harm children. This sentiment contributed to an atmosphere where Sharif was viewed as deserving of such treatment.

The court proceedings revealed that Sharif received a minimum sentence of 40 years, while Batool was sentenced to 33 years for their respective crimes. Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, wasalso implicated, receiving a 16-year sentence for his involvement in causing or allowing her death.

The harrowing details presented during the trial highlighted that Sara endured “unimaginable pain, misery, and anxiety” at the hands of her father and stepmother.

‘Neglect, assaults, and torture’

Sara’s lifeless body was discovered in their Surrey residence in August 2023, after enduring treatment that the presiding judge characterized as “gruesome.”

During the sentencing at the Old Bailey, Mr. Justice Cavanagh emphasized that Sara’s death was the result of years of neglect, frequent violence, and what could only be described as torture.

The judge reflected on the nature of Sara’s abuse, which unfolded “in plain sight” within the family. He stated to Sharif, “You acted in such a manner because you believed it was your right to impose brutal discipline on her.”

Mr. Justice Cavanagh also noted Sara’s resilience, stating: “She was a spirited child, not one to submit to the expectations set upon her.”

The judge pointed out that Sara’s tragic fate also highlighted the “dangers” associated with unsupervised home schooling, as the couple had previously withdrawn her from school amidst safeguarding concerns. Although Sara had shown visible signs of abuse at school, no intervention was made by social services.

HMP Belmarsh is known as a high-security prison, housing notorious criminals including those convicted of terrorism and multiple homicides.
