FDA Issues Serious Salmonella Warning for Costco Eggs
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a critical warning regarding the distribution of thousands of eggs sold at Costco stores across multiple states. This warning comes amidst concerns that consuming these eggs could lead to severe health issues, including the potential for death.
The eggs in question are from the Handsome Brook Farms brand, specifically their Signature Organic Pasture-Raised 24-Count Eggs. Approximately 10,800 units were shipped to Costco locations in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, starting from November 22.
Initially, the FDA initiated a recall just five days after the distribution began, on November 27. However, the situation escalated, and the agency subsequently upgraded the recall to Class 1 status, categorizing it as the most serious level of food safety alert.
In their announcement on November 27, Handsome Brook Farms explained that the recall was triggered due to the inadvertent packaging and distribution of eggs that were not meant for retail sale. The company has committed to enhancing its supply chain protocols and instituting retraining measures to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.
The affected egg cartons bear the numbers 327 and P1363, with a use-by date of January 5, 2025. Consumers who may have purchased these eggs are advised to refrain from consuming them and consider returning them to Costco for a complete refund or disposing of them safely.
As of now, efforts to gather a response from Costco have not yielded results, leaving many consumers seeking clarity on the situation.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella infections can have severe repercussions, particularly for vulnerable populations. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, typically manifesting between six hours and six days after exposure and lasting from four to seven days.
Those at higher risk include children under five, the elderly over 65, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Affected individuals may require medical attention or hospitalization for serious cases.
