Deft Hints at Return to League of Legends After Military Service

Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, the celebrated veteran of League of Legends, has indicated that he may not be entirely finished with professional gaming. Despite his impending compulsory military service set to commence next year in South Korea, Deft teased the possibility of returning to the competitive scene after his service concludes.

At 27 years old, Deft has been a prominent figure within Korea’s LCK competition and the broader global stage since 2013. He has established himself as one of the finest AD carries in the game’s history, particularly solidifying his legendary status in 2022 when he led his team, DRX, to an unexpected triumph at the World Championship. Initially regarded as potentially his final competitive outing, he continued his career with another campaign in 2024.

As time progresses, however, this veteran is preparing to transition into military life, a requirement for all South Korean males who must complete at least 18 months of service between their 18th and 35th birthdays. Nonetheless, this development does not appear to signify a permanent retirement for Deft. Instead, it seems he views his departure as a temporary hiatus.

“Ending everything with today’s loss feels too disappointing, so I think I might challenge myself again after completing my military service,” Deft expressed during a recent interview. His reflective sentiments indicate a desire to return, albeit with uncertainty about the future as he embarks on this significant life change.

In his farewell messages, Deft reached out to his dedicated fanbase, emphasizing his hope for future reunions. “I don’t think I might be able to greet you guys for quite a while, so stay healthy and be happy, till we meet again,” he said after a hard-fought five-game match against KT’s rivals.

As he wrapped up his appearance on the LCK stage, Deft maintained his composure, flashing a smile as he collected his belongings. He exited with a respectful bow, a gesture acknowledging the support of the many fans present.

In his social media posts, he conveyed heartfelt gratitude to his followers: “I hope you guys always stay happy and healthy. Thank you so much… I look forward to the day I can return and greet you again.”

With Deft now facing mandatory military training over the next two years, any potential return would not occur until at least 2027 when he turns 30. While age can often raise questions about the capacity to perform at a high level in esports, numerous professional gamers remain competitive well into their late 20s and beyond.

However, the uncertainty lingers regarding whether Deft can seamlessly reintegrate into the fiercely competitive environment of the LCK and its multitude of international tournaments after such a prolonged break.

For the moment, the gaming community is left to ponder the future of one of League of Legends‘ most illustrious icons, as Deft embarks on a journey that could determine whether he steps back into the arena or chooses a different path altogether.
