Fellow’s Series 1 Espresso Machine: A Game Changer in Home Brewing
The innovation behind the Fellow Series 1 espresso machine largely hinges on its advanced heating technology, referred to by the brand as a “boosted boiler.” This system diverges from conventional espresso machines that typically utilize either a sluggish standard boiler or the quick yet less reliable thermojet found in mid-range options. Instead, the Series 1 amalgamates features from both these approaches. It employs a low thermal mass heater that preheats the water in record time before it is directed to the boiler. A final heat controller situated at the group head – where the water is dispensed – helps maintain stability, allowing the Series 1 to be ready for brewing significantly faster than many rivals. In comparison, the current leading espresso machine in testing, the Lelit Mara X, requires a preheat time of approximately 12 to 15 minutes and performs best if allowed to stabilize for over 20 minutes. In contrast, the Series 1 is ready to brew in just two minutes after being powered on.
The steam wand of the Series 1 is robust and equipped with a built-in thermistor, which continuously monitors the milk temperature. This feature enables the machine’s display to indicate optimal temperature settings for different beverages, such as 135℉ for flat whites and 140℉ for cappuccinos, ensuring the right foam textures for both drinks. Future updates, as mentioned by Miller, are set to introduce real-time guidance displayed on the machine, helping users refine their milk steaming technique. This hands-on style is particularly appealing compared to the automatic steaming systems employed by competitors like Breville, as it encourages users to develop their skills.
Aesthetically, the Series 1 stands out among home espresso machines. While many high-end models favor a cold industrial look with stainless steel and black plastic, the Series 1 is available in eye-catching colors, including black, red, and a light chocolate brown. It conveys a sophisticated coffee shop vibe, adding character to any kitchen. Although it’s wider than most home machines and will require some counter space, it is compact enough to fit conveniently beneath overhead cabinets.
While my testing did not include every feature promised by Fellow prior to launch, my previous experiences with Fellow’s Aiden machine suggest a consistent trajectory of improvement with each update. This gives me every reason to believe that the Series 1 will fulfill its claims and elevate the home espresso-making experience.
